Say hello to Maneki-Neko, better known as the Lucky Cat. For those who may not know the legend of the Lucky Cat, please allow Sálo to fill you in.
The story begins in a rundown, poverty-stricken temple in 17th-century Tokyo. The temple’s priest was extremely poor, yet he shared what little food he had with his pet cat.
One day, a wealthy and important man was caught in a storm while hunting and took refuge under a tree near the temple. As he waited for the storm to pass, the man noticed a cat beckoning for him to come inside the temple. Drawn by such an unusual site, the man left the shelter of the tree to get a closer look at the strange cat. Suddenly, the tree was struck by lightning and came crashing down – right where the man had been sitting just moments before.
Feeling his life had been spared as a result of being beckoned by this lucky cat, the wealthy man became a friend and benefactor to the temple, ushering in a whole new era of prosperity – and the priest and his cat never went hungry again.
Four centuries later, it’s believed that if you display the Lucky Cat in a prominent location within your business, it will attract customers and bring prosperity through your door.
